Eventually it was late enough for Revus to wonder where his son had got to. He searched the house, suspecting where Jax would be as soon as he realised that Jax’s room was empty.

He climbed the stairs to the top floor, his steps becoming slower the closer he got. Then he knocked softly on the door to Arianna’s room, and pushed it open carefully when there was no answer.

Jax was still asleep on the sofa, and the room had become quite cold again as the evening went on. His face in sleep was completely untroubled. Revus did not have the heart to wake him.

He went to fetch a blanket, and draped it over Jax to stop him from getting too cold. The edge of the blanket covered the phone, which Revus did not notice until it fell onto the floor.

He picked it up cautiously, not being familiar with Terran technology like his son was.

The last text from Shannon was shown on the face of the phone, and it said “Don’t care if ur mad, just tell me if ur OK???”

Revus wondered what to do. Holding the phone gingerly in his left hand, he touched the screen with his right index finger. The screen was not locked, and the phone immediately sprang to life.

With some difficulty, Revus located the source of the text message, finding an icon with the number three highlighted. When he tapped it, three unread messages from Shannon were shown at the top of the screen.

Revus determinedly did not read them, wanting only to send a reply so that Shannon did not worry. Eventually the keyboard presented itself, and he slowly typed a short message.

“Jax asleep. Regards, Revus.”

Revus waited for a minute after he had pressed send, not sure if there was something else that he was supposed to do. He had been holding the phone very carefully all this time, almost as if it were a bomb that would go off if he pressed the wrong button. When the screen lit up again with Shannon’s reply, Revus nearly dropped it.

“OK thx,” she had written.

Thx? Revus wondered to himself. What could that possibly mean? As if reading his mind, the phone flashed again.

“I mean, thank you” it said, followed by smiley face.

Revus found himself smiling back at the screen. This texting is very effective, he thought. Perhaps I should get myself a phone after all.

Shannon, meanwhile, was sitting on her bed at home with a preoccupied expression. She leaned back against the pillows, frowning. Despite the reply that she had received from Revus, she was still worried about Jax.

Shannon knew that all of the information he had suddenly received about his mother was bound to be overwhelming. But if he didn’t want to talk to her about it, there wasn’t much that she could do to help.

She decided that the best thing would be to carry on as normal. This week she was at the Seminary for three days, which meant that she would be there tomorrow. And if Jax was asleep already, he would hopefully be a lot less tired.
